History
Throughout its history, Coleshill has been part of the parish of Amersham. The soil of the churchyard probably represents the unimproved ground of the original clearing on which Coleshill was founded. For 1000 years there was nothing to disturb the peace except the munching of cattle. As early as 1649 Coleshill people were expressing the wish to have a church of their own – ‘the inhabitants earnestly desiring the same’, as it was recorded, but they had to wait over 200 years before their desire was gratified.

Then the Lord of the manor gave a small triangle from the northern tip of the common to the churchwardens of Amersham to meet the wish expressed as long ago as 1649 for a church for the villagers of Coleshill.

Through the generosity of the Drake family and other local benefactors, the architect George Street, a distinguished exponent of neo-Gothic, was commissioned to design and build the church which was completed in 1856. The church has the beautiful proportions and unpretentious detail for which Street’s work is admired, and has been praised by Sir John Betjeman. The brick was made locally and the stone brought by river to Windsor, and thence by cart.

The two-manual pipe organ is considered to be a distinguished instrument and is constantly maintained in excellent order.

News from All Saints'

Christian Aid
More than a dozen people from the village helped with the door to door collection for Christian Aid, during the special week recently. The total collected this year was £852. A big thank you to Hazel Thomas and her team.

All Saints’ Charity – Craft and Gift Fair
The Craft and Gift Fair held in the Village Hall on 15th May gave a splendid selection of crafts and gifts to buy and enjoy - sixteen stalls of great variety - from books to bespoke jewellery; cards to children’s clothes; home ware gifts to home made cakes and, of course, a plant stall. It was enjoyed by people from Coleshill and Amersham who went away with gifts for others - and themselves.
It is hoped that it will have made a profit of around £350 which will go to the Rosanna Hospital in Kurdistan which does such a splendid job of caring for the sick in that troubled area of the world.

New Flower Bed
If you have walked through the churchyard recently you will have seen the new flower bed close to the church porch. This was designed and planted by Jane Stainer at her own expense. The main elements of the design represent the Twelve Apostles, around a central holly recalling the Crown of Thorns. The result is most pleasing and our grateful thanks are due to Jane for her generosity.

Church Flowers - Flower Festival
There will be a Flower Festival with music at All Saints' on Saturday 11th July and Sunday 12th July 2009.
The flowers in church over the Christmas period were beautiful, glowing with candles, and they lasted for ages because it was so cold. The windowsill arrangements were prepared in time for the Christingle service and were a lovely background to a winter wedding in mid-December.

Our annual Coffee Morning and Bring and Buy was held this year at the home of Jane and Harry McNeilly and was much enjoyed by all who came along for the coffee and chat. It has also raised £360.00 for the Church Flower Fund to help pay for the flowers throughout the year which is an excellent result. Thanks to Jane for being such a hospitable hostess and to everyone who contributed their help, their goodies and their cash.

The next floral church event will be Easter when the church will be full of spring flowers (we hope – in view of the weather we have had!) and Lilies in Remembrance. If you would like to donate a lily the cost is £2.50 and it is a lovely way to remember loved ones. Please let me know if you would like to do this well before Easter as the lilies have to be ordered well in advance. Names of those remembered are displayed in the church porch at Easter time.

Many thanks as always to our excellent flower team who always manage to produce beautiful flowers in church and excel themselves at all the major church festivals. Anyone else who is interested in joining us will be made very welcome.

All Saints' Charity
After a break since last summer, All Saints Charity is arranging its next event for Friday 15th May 2009. This will be a Craft Fair in Coleshill Village Hall from 10 - 12.30. There will be lots of varied stalls such as luxury silk items, clothes, cards, books, plants and jewellery - and of course delicious refreshments and a raffle. By coming to support us, you will not only have an interesting and enjoyable morning but also be helping to support the Rosanna Hospital in Kurdistan.

Sunday Services

There have been changes in the pattern of Sunday Services at All Saints’. Formerly there was a 10.00 am service on the second Sunday of the month, but this timing has been cancelled. In future all morning services will be at 9.00am. The Book of Common Prayer is used on the first and third Sundays, and ‘Common Worship’ on the second and fourth Sundays. When there is a fifth Sunday in the month there will be the service of Matins.
