The Coleshill Horticultural Society

Horticultural Society News
Can we express our most sincerest thanks to all those who attended the annual Spring Talk, our guest speaker, Timothy Walker was as always, educational, entertaining and provocative.
To see so many villagers turn up along with friends and to so obviously enjoy the evening, makes all the effort worth while.

As we now look forward to the Village Show, for which you will all be receiving show schedules and entry details, can we yet again plead with all villagers ‘ TO HAVE A GO’ there are so many categories to choose from, that we are sure you and your family can find something to enter. The Village Show will be in the Village Hall on Saturday 6th September 2008.

The very essence of village life, the very reason that we all love to be part of this wonderful rural setting, is summed up in any Village Annual Show, when all of the village comes together, in good humour and a spirit of togetherness, to keep alive the village feel. We do not look for perfect specimens, what we want to see is simply ‘ That you have had a go’ - what could be more simple.

As a resident of the village you are automatically a member of the Coleshill Horticultural Society, it is your society, in your village, it also needs people to manage it, to keep these iconic village functions from disappearing, the committee desperately needs new incumbents to help takes us through the next 60 years, so if you would like to help, please contact us.

We will be expecting record numbers of entries this year, so start planting, growing, painting, crafting, arranging, cooking, baking, photographing, knitting, sewing, brewing, preserving, so start preparing .
See you all there Susan & David Smith

The Annual Village Show
will be held on SATURDAY 6th SEPTEMBER 2008 in the Village Hall as usual. Schedules for the event will go out to all villagers so as you can start planning your plan’s of action.

We wish to continue the good work of previous year’s and actively encourage all age groups to enter. Even if you can not grow anything, maybe you can make something, or paint something, or cut and plant something. The choices are endless, so get planning.

Notelets
Finally, we have produced some very attractive notelets based on the original posters that our late President Ewart Smith made for Spring talks in years gone by. A set of 6 different designs is available for only £3.50, and all profits will go to his favourite charity, Marie Curie Cancer Care.

About the Society
The Horticultural Society came into existence at the end of World War II and free membership is automatic for all residents of Coleshill.

A full calendar of activities is held each year. The Village Horticultural Show is the main annual event. Held every year in the Village Hall in September Everyone is encouraged to enter at least one class and this may be in the flowers, fruit or vegetable sections, cookery, photography, craft or flower arranging. The children's sections are particularly enjoyable and the most competitive section is the rock cakes made by men, unaided! There are cups and small cash prizes to be won but the emphasis is on fun and, if you haven't entered before, do have a go. Like the Village Fete, the Show has become one of the traditional calendar dates in Coleshill

I’d firstly like to remind everyone that all residents of Coleshill are automatically members of the society, and we welcome your participation in all our events.

Horticultural Society Committee
The committee comprises John Jefford, Carol McCulloch, Colin Sach, John Savory, Susan and David Smith, and Sue Windsor. Colin and David have nobly agreed to be our Treasurer and Secretary, and John (Savory) is kindly giving me the benefits of his wisdom and experience - as well as a great deal of practical support - in getting the Village Show on the road for September 4th.

The new committee is working hard on the plans for the Show. Apart from making it run smoothly, our main aim is to get as many people as possible involved. With this in mind, we have made a few changes - as you will see in the Schedule which is being delivered along with your newsletter. It really is fun to have a go, and more entries make the show more enjoyable for everyone.

The committee have lots of other ideas that we’ll be working on during the autumn once the show is over – so watch this space!

Wishing you all good gardening weather, and good weather in which to enjoy your gardens.
