Red Lion News - Spring 2012
It hardly seems possible that Easter is nearly here. We had a very enjoyable festive season culminating in a very popular winner of the Boxing Day golf tournament. In his year as Captain of Denham Golf Club, Ian McCallum triumphed over 60 contestants in a year made more difficult not by the weather but by the awful condition of the road. No accidents mercifully - and we wish Ian a successful year at Denham.
Competitions in the various winter leagues are nearing their conclusion and all of our teams are possible winners. The Monday darts team are top of their league and in the semi-final of one knockout cup. The Tuesday team have creditably held their own in Division 1 of the John Jackson league under the stewardship of Kerry Ferguson. Both quiz teams, although having moderate league success, are in the semi-finals of the Cup and Plate competitions respectively. The crib and dominoes team are in second place in the league with an outside chance of catching the Gate from Bryants Bottom. They have reached the semi-final of the league plate competition also, which they won last year. The Lion continues to roar!
We are looking forward to playing a pivotal role in the Jubilee celebrations in June and are working closely with the village organising committee. We are delighted to be supporting Will Richardson of the Royal Marines from Wilton Park, who is raising money for Afghan Heroes by attempting to run the 134 mile Chiltern Way in under 40 hours. He is setting off from the Red Lion at 2pm on Friday 2nd March and hopes to be here having a well earned bath by 10pm on Saturday evening! We are sponsoring his effort in conjunction with Windsor and Eton Brewery. For every pint of the brewery's Guardsman bitter that is purchased, 50% (£1.50) goes towards the charity.
Finally we are pleased to say that villagers are making use of our grocery service on as regular basis as ever (a service provided since the demise of the village shop in 1992). For newcomers, we are open from 9am in case you run short of necessities such as bread, milk, eggs, butter, etc.
A very happy Easter from Chris and I.
